Domestic Sampler
How weird and wonderful it is to be domesticated. I currently live in the suburbs of Long Island, which is also where I grew up. It is a place that I know and am familiar with, but there are also many aspects that are not completely comfortable to me. I was made to play baseball, almost became an altar boy and was utterly terrified of water. As a result of my trepidation I swam in the baby section of the public pool for one season longer than my mother and father would have liked.
For the most part my childhood memories are warm, but as an adult I often find myself pondering some of the more unsettling recollections that frequently bubble their way up to the surface. For this body of work I set out to invent little theatrical scenes that attempt to contain some of the strange excitement I feel about the subject of domestication. The fear of an intruder breaking into your home is significant but what good are a washer and dryer without two hands to fold your husband's underwear. Bloody noses, robotic limbs, Lazy Boy recliners, claustrophobic showers and birthday parties that end in despair are just a few insights into this average world.
My aim is to reveal the subtle punch lines that are always present but usually overlooked. I hoped to capture what is truly fantastic in the mundane lives of Anywhere, U.S.A..
